Running Out Of Hot Water Every Morning Is A Sizing Problem

Ben AustinBy Ben AustinAugust 13, 2026No Comments3 Views

Why does the fifth shower on a weekday morning always come out lukewarm? In most of the houses I walk into the tank is fine, and the real reason behind the water heater installation Evansville IN homeowners end up paying for is arithmetic nobody ran the first time. A 40 gallon gas tank serving a family of five does not fail at 6:40 in the morning; it spends the whole hour playing catch-up and never wins. Size the unit by what the house actually draws in its busiest hour, not by the number stamped on the label. That is the entire argument.

Tank Size Is Not The Number That Matters

The figure that decides your morning is the first hour rating, which counts how many gallons a unit can deliver in sixty minutes starting from a full, hot tank. Ten years ago the prescription for a cold last shower was easy. Put in a bigger tank, walk away, send the invoice. That got complicated in 2015, when federal efficiency standards pushed most residential tanks above 55 gallons into power vent or heat pump designs, and a utility closet framed in a 1970s ranch was never laid out with the clearance, the drain, or the electrical for either one. So the honest fix today is usually a 50 gallon unit with a high recovery burner, or a tankless sized for cold winter inlet water, instead of simply a taller box.

Example scenario: illustrative peak hour planning figures for a five person Evansville ranch, not metered use

Busiest Hour In The House Hot Water Drawn (Gallons) Equipment That Keeps Up
Two showers, back to back 34 40 gallon gas tank, standard recovery
Three showers plus the dishwasher 57 50 gallon gas tank, high recovery burner
Three showers, dishwasher, one laundry load 74 75 gallon power vent tank or sized tankless
Four showers inside one hour 80 Tankless sized for winter inlet temperature

Move up to a bigger gas burner and the venting and combustion air have to be re-checked, which matters a great deal in a closed closet off a hallway. The Consumer Product Safety Commission calls for a carbon monoxide alarm near the bedrooms in each sleeping area and an annual professional inspection of fuel burning heating equipment, and a gas water heater is exactly that kind of equipment. Soot streaking the draft hood, a pilot that will not stay lit, or the smell of exhaust drifting into the laundry room all point at a unit that is back-drafting its combustion gases into the house instead of up the flue.

If you smell gas, do not relight anything and do not hunt for the leak yourself. Get everyone out of the house and call 911 or the gas utility from outside.

Questions Worth Asking Before A Water Heater Quote

A written bid for water heater installation Evansville IN homeowners can hold up against a second bid names the first hour rating, the venting plan, what happens to the old unit, and who pulls the permit. Most quotes name a brand, a capacity and a price, then stop. Ask how that capacity got chosen, and listen for whether the answer involves your household or whatever was already sitting on the truck.

    • What is the first hour rating on the unit you are quoting, and how does it compare to our busiest hour? A good answer counts fixtures running at the same time, not bedrooms.
    • How will it be vented, and does that closet have enough combustion air? A good answer names the vent type and the free air opening, not a promise that it will pass inspection.
    • Is our water hard enough to justify a softener or an annual flush? A good answer quotes a hardness test result in grains per gallon.
    • Who is on the job and who carries the insurance? A good answer is the licensed contractor in writing, with liability and workers compensation coverage you can verify.

That last question sounds like paperwork right up until you remember this is construction work happening inside your house. As of August 2026, OSHA’s fall prevention campaign puts 389 of the 1,034 construction deaths recorded in 2024 down to falls, and fall protection remains the standard it cites more often than any other across all industries. Water heater work is not roof work. But the crew wrestling a 200 pound tank up a basement stairwell belongs to the same trade and the same insurance question, and a contractor who answers it comfortably usually answers the technical questions comfortably too.

Right Sized Beats Bigger Every Morning

Here is what I cannot tell you: how many gallons your household really burns between 6:30 and 7:30. Nobody meters hot water separately from cold, published estimates for a single teenage shower range from about 10 gallons to 25, and after a lot of years at this I have never found a source that settles the question honestly. So we count fixtures, ask what runs at once on the worst weekday, and build in margin. Job after job, the households that stay happy are the ones sized for that bad Tuesday rather than for an average day that never actually occurs.

Water hardness is the other half of protecting the money you just spent, because scale settling on a burner plate insulates the flame from the water it is supposed to heat and quietly drags recovery back toward where you started. A hardness test before the install and a flush on a schedule after it will do more for the life of the unit than another 25 gallons of capacity. Right sized, vented correctly, and maintained, a good heater gives you ten years of mornings you never think about. Nobody argues in the hallway when the fifth shower is still hot.
