New AI features? A better camera? A brand-new cooling system and a longer-lasting battery?

All these upgrades are convincing enough for an upgrade. But, do you need to upgrade your iPhone if you already have a 15 Pro Max?

Let’s talk about the leaks and rumors for the latest iPhone 16 and if it’s going to be a worthy upgrade if you already have a recent iPhone model.

    iOS 18 With AI Features

There have been a lot of different rumors about how iOS 18 is going to add AI features to the iPhone. With other smartphone manufacturers like Google and Samsung adding several new AI features to their flagships, Apple’s surprising absence has been a cause of concern for many.

But, you won’t have to wait for too long to find out about Apple’s planned AI features for iOS since Apple is going to hold the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 10, 2024.

To simply get the AI features, you might not have to upgrade to the latest iPhone. In a report from Mark Gurman, he suggested that the AI features in iOS 18 may also come to the iPhone Pro models since they use a vastly powerful A17 Pro chipset.

This includes a more natural-sounding Siri and live transcriptions of voice memos.

There are also rumors about AI features being available on the cloud as well, and this rumor now holds more value since Apple recently sealed a deal with OpenAI, to power Siri. The cloud AI features are going to be a treat for people using devices with iOS 18 since it will support the same devices as iOS 17.

Although these features are going to be a treat to a lot of people, the general audience won’t be using these AI features too much to justify an upgrade.

    A Better Battery

Almost every year, Apple makes some iterative upgrades to the battery. The same is the case this year. Rumors suggest that the 16 Pro Max will get a battery increase of around 5%.

But, what’s interesting this time is that Apple might opt for using the stacked battery technology, which can result in a longer lifespan and a higher battery capacity. These are commonly used in electric vehicles and other larger battery devices.

Using a stacked battery can result in faster charging speeds too, with the rumors suggesting that wired charging speed will be bumped up to 40W whereas MagSafe charging will go up to 20W.

    Thermal Improvements

Apple might finally implement a new thermal design to combat the overheating problem that has plagued a lot of iPhones.

Apple is said to be using a graphene thermal system and a metallic battery casing for the Pro models to improve heat dissipation. This is going to be perfect for iPhone gamers who have to use cooling fans with their phones.

I’m someone who does a lot of gaming on the iPhone. Since WiFi isn’t as reliable for gaming, Xfinity customer service suggested that I use a wired connection. So, I use a USB-C hub, with which I can connect to my phone using the USB-C port. To the hub, I can connect an Ethernet cable for wired internet and a cooling fan to keep my iPhone from heating up.

    Camera Technology

The iPhone 16 Pro models could be getting an improved 48MP Ultra Wide lens, along with a 48MP Wide lens already present in the iPhone 15 Pro. The camera might use pixel-binning technology to combine four pixels into one, to improve the quality of the image.

The Wide-angle lens might also feature an eight-part hybrid lens which will bring improvements to the image quality.

The iPhone 16 Pro might get the 5x Telephoto lens this time around, instead of the tech being limited to the larger 16 Pro Max.

Talking about the base iPhone 16 models, we might see a change to the camera layout this time around. The standard models might get a vertical camera lens this time around, rather than the diagonal lens layout on the base iPhone 15 models.

The design is going to be a mixture of the design of the camera layout on the iPhone X and the iPhone 12 models. This is likely being done to add Spatial Video capture to the camera in the base iPhone 16 models.

Will the Upgrades Be Worth It?

Nothing concrete can be said about whether the upgrades are going to be worth changing your current iPhone. However, if you have anywhere between an iPhone 13 and 15, you should be fine with your current phone.

However, people with an iPhone 12 or older might want to look to upgrade their iPhone, once the newer models are announced in September 2024.
