Top Tips for Seamless International Communication

    Ben AustinBy Ben AustinAugust 12, 2024Updated:August 13, 2024No Comments77 Views

Our connections are spread out more than ever. Communicating with people internationally, from friends and family overseas to colleagues on a different continent, has never been more critical in our everyday lives. While the best way to contact people internationally may initially be unclear, with the right tips and tricks, you can be well on your way to secure and affordable international communication.

From calling and texting to emailing or messaging on apps, here are the top tips you need to know for seamless international communication.

    International Calls and Texts

Calls and texts are among the top ways we communicate with each other over long distances; however, international calling is a little different from domestic communication.

Most people have one of two types of phone contracts:

    1. Pay Monthly — where you pay a fixed amount each month for a certain number of texts, calls, and data.
    2. Pay-as-you-go —  where you add credit to your phone contract as needed, giving you access to a certain amount of calls, texts, or data per dollar you put in.

For both contracts, many people use their phones primarily for domestic calls, texts, and data. Before you start calling abroad on your standard contract, you should check your international rate or even upgrade to a specific international call contract. You’ll want to find the best deals and rates for topping up internationally, no matter where you are.  For example, suppose you need to recharge Tigo in Guatemala from the US. In that case, it’s worth looking at all the available top-up providers, such as BOSS Revolution to find the cheapest rate and most secure payments.

    Using Data for Internet Access

Around 66% of the world’s population is connected to the internet, making data and WiFi one of the top ways to contact anyone internationally.

Whether it be data coverage or WiFi, much of the globe has access to the internet — the only challenge is finding reliable or secure connections. When WiFi isn’t an option, it’s vital that you have a sufficient data plan to stay connected.

To better manage your data usage and ensure you always have some ready, make sure to:

    1. Use data-tracking tools to monitor usage and avoid unexpected charges.
    2. Set up data usage alerts on your device to help you avoid going over the limit.
    3. Download videos, offline maps, or other content on free WiFi before traveling to save data.

This will help reduce your data usage, ensuring you have enough to connect to the internet and communicate internationally whenever you want, wherever you are.

    Emails

Although not always as instant, emails still remain one of the best ways to communicate internationally – especially in the world of work. Emails use little data and allow you to send text and attachments quickly across time zones, making them useful for non-urgent international communication.  However, they lack many of the advantages of calls or video calls, such as a lack of tone or body language, leading to misunderstandings and the risk of people losing messages in filled-up inboxes.

    Digital Apps

Various apps allow you to send messages, join live video and audio calls, and more, all using internet access over WiFi or data.

Platforms like Google Meet have become extremely popular for hosting digital meetings and video calls. At the same time, other apps, such as BOSS Revolution, have emerged as excellent all-in-one platforms for affordable international calling.

    Staying Secure With International Communication

Cost is essential. So is reliability. However, many people underestimate the importance of using secure methods of international communication.

    Choosing the Right Tools

Alongside considering a provider’s cost, reputation, or speed, make sure you always choose an international communication platform with solid security.

Whether you’re calling internationally with BOSS Revolution, sending emails, or hosting video calls, the security levels of your platform are critical. Whatever method you use, there should be end-to-end encryption.

Check reviews before using a platform, provider, or tool to identify any user issues with low security.

    General Strategies

Alongside choosing the right platform, there are several things you can do to ensure a seamless, secure experience when communicating internationally.

    These include:

    1. Avoid Public WiFi: Exercise caution around public WiFi networks, as these are often easy to intercept and access for hackers. Never access or share sensitive information (such as sending someone your bank details) over public WiFi.
    2. Update Your Apps: Keep your devices and apps updated. Communication companies, from the makers of your phone to the network provider you’re on, are always trying to increase their security — this only works if you have the most up-to-date version.
    3. Use Encryption: Try to use encrypted messaging apps whenever you send sensitive information to bolster your security.
    4. Use Caution: Be wary of unknown numbers or suspicious messages with links. These may be part of phishing attempts to get you to give up your data.
    5. 2FA: Where possible, enable two-factor authentication on your devices for extra communication security.

    Using a VPN

For all things on the internet, using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) can help make your international communication much more secure.  This will encrypt your internet connection, making it difficult to intercept your data. It will also mask your IP address from any potential hackers, hiding your location and protecting your privacy.

If you are going to use a VPN, try to find a provider that offers robust security, servers in multiple countries, and one that operates a no-logs policy — essentially meaning they don’t track you.

    Conclusions

Whether you’re planning to call internationally or use the internet for your communication, always look around for the best deals on data, calls, and texts.

The truth is, whether you’re calling from France to China or from the USA to Guatemala, consistent international communication will usually require multiple tools. International calls and texts help you quickly reach friends and family abroad. Meanwhile, the internet allows you to speak almost face-to-face with video calls, or send important documents and files internationally.

Whatever you choose, stay safe, stay secure, and enjoy your calls!
