The Impact of Brands on the Last US Elections: Musk, Tesla, and Trump

    Ben AustinBy Ben AustinMarch 21, 2025Updated:April 10, 2025No Comments30 Views

In the U.S. election cycle, branding has shifted from being a business activity to directly affecting political campaigns. In the last elections, branding more than anything else, was at the center of winning the trust and shaping perceptions of the people. This was clearly observed with how brands like Trump, Elon Musk or businesses like Tesla affected electoral results. A carefully managed brand identity coupled with effective design and messaging can easily manipulate public opinion, encourage voter turnout, and change the politics of an entire country.

Musk and Tesla: A New Breed of Political Influence

Elon Musk is a personality and businessman whose name, along with his firm, Tesla, has gained brand recognition in popular culture recently. Both as an electric vehicle producer and as an emblem of the clean energy movement, Tesla’s triumphs can be attributed to the innovation and engineering of its products as well as to the brand image that Musk has built over the years. The image of Musk has transformed into a brand name over the years and the public’s devotion to Tesla as a company has exponentially increased its value, giving it powerful media coverage.  Musk has also shifted the influence he holds over the media to the political sphere with the recent U.S. elections being an example. His candid demeanor, especially on different platforms, has crafted him into a divisive personality. Musk controls the narrative, supporting or opposing different political functionalities, and offers differing assessments regarding topical subjects. With the blurring of the line between entrepreneurship and influencer culture, Musk shows that he can impact the population’s decision in a manner that is out of reach for many politicians.

For example, Musk’s endorsement of certain political policies, particularly those focused on space exploration and sustainable energy, aligns with Tesla’s brand message. His ability to leverage both Tesla’s image and his own personal brand allowed him to garner support from a segment of voters who prioritize technology, sustainability, and innovation. A branding company would emphasize how Musk’s personal and corporate brands are deeply intertwined, allowing him to speak directly to the values of his audience.

Trump’s Brand: A Political Force Like No Other

Surely, Donald Trump serves as one of the most obvious examples of branding influencing politics. A trademark label was right from the onset of his campaign and remained with him at the time of his presidency, throughout his political career. His name derives from a brand that is instantly associated with riches, fame, and audacity. The “Make America Great Again” slogan did not just serve as a battle cry for his fans, rather transformed in itself to become an idol of Trump’s political identity.

All throughout his political undertakings, Trump used that slogan to induce a sense of Trumpian identity to his voters. The branding routine was the signature of his campaign strategy. The visuals used, the tagline, and the emotional value attached created a brand strong enough to survive opposition and negative impacts. He was in so many ways, the face of a brand: fierce, disputable, and relentless. America became accustomed to bifurcated perceptions and social media, specifically Twitter, made it effortless for him to pound over the opposite view while sustaining and enhancing his identity.

A design and branding company would analyze Trump’s brand as one that created a distinct, consistent narrative. His message was clear: he was a successful businessman who could bring the same approach to the presidency, disrupting the establishment and representing the will of the people. His brand resonated with voters who felt alienated from the political establishment and saw him as a powerful figure who could deliver on promises, no matter how unconventional.

The Intersection of Musk, Tesla, and Trump’s Brands

The brands of Musk, Tesla, and Trump have all left their respective marks on American politics. Trump and Musk, two notoriously controversial businessmen, were able to sway audiences and change the nature of political conversation with their established brands. Both businessmen have managed to carve out specific audiences for their brands, whether it is through Musk’s innovation and sustainability approach or the unabashedly bold crassness of Trump’s tone.

As an early adopter of innovation, Musk was positioned as the ideal identity for the younger electorate keen on sustainability and technology policies. Voters worried about climate change and space exploration, for instance, found his progress-and-innovation infused brand message highly appealing. In contrast, space and climate Trump supporters who admire his no-nonsense reasoning, and who want American politics stirred quite appreciated the selling approach of the “successful businessman” Trump brand.

The influence of brand in the last U.S. elections cannot be overstated. Whether it’s Musk’s cutting-edge technology and personal persona or Trump’s bold political rhetoric and business acumen, branding has played a pivotal role in shaping voter perceptions. Political candidates and figures today are more than just individuals; they are brands that must be carefully crafted and strategically communicated. A design and branding company understands the importance of creating a compelling, cohesive narrative, and in the realm of politics, this skill is more valuable than ever. From political messaging to social media presence, branding is now at the heart of shaping political outcomes. As we move forward, it’s clear that brand identity—whether in business or politics—will continue to have a significant impact on shaping future elections.
