Is Renting a Car in Tirana Safe? Full Guide

Ben AustinBy Ben AustinJanuary 8, 2025No Comments55 Views

Traveling in Albania can be an unforgettable experience, filled with breathtaking views, rich culture, and incredible cuisine. One of the best ways to explore this beautiful country is by renting a car. In particular, renting a car in Tirana, the bustling capital, is not only a safe choice but also a comfortable and cost-effective option for travelers. If you’re considering renting a car for your trip, here’s a full guide on the safety and benefits of car rentals in Albania.

Why Renting a Car in Tirana is a Great Idea

When it comes to getting around Tirana and beyond, renting a car is often the most convenient choice. Public transport options can be limited, especially if you plan to visit rural or remote areas. Additionally, Albania’s road system has improved significantly over the years, making driving through the country easier and safer.

For visitors staying in Tirana, renting a car provides the freedom to explore at your own pace. Whether you’re heading to a nearby beach, exploring the mountains, or visiting historical sites, having a car gives you the flexibility you need.

Plus, renting a car in Albania is an affordable option, with prices for a daily rental starting as low as 30 dollars per day. If you plan to stay longer, you can even receive a discount, as I did during my 10-day trip.

A Personal Experience Renting a Car in Tirana

During my recent trip to Albania, I decided to rent a car with my friends to explore the country. We chose a reliable local agency, Shehu Rental Car, based in Tirana. The process was incredibly smooth and hassle-free. We rented a Golf 6a for our trip, and I have to say, it was the perfect car for our group. It was economical, easy to drive, and spacious enough for our luggage and travel gear.

The staff at Shehu Rental Car was very friendly and professional, which made the experience even more enjoyable. They offered us a great deal, and with our 10-day rental, we received a fantastic discount. The Golf 6 was in excellent condition and well-maintained, which gave us peace of mind throughout our journey.

    Exploring Tirana and Beyond

Tirana is a vibrant city, and there’s so much to see and do. We spent a couple of days in the city itself, exploring landmarks such as Skanderbeg Square, the National History Museum, and the Dajti Mountain National Park. The city is known for its lively cafés, delicious food, and stunning architecture, blending traditional Albanian styles with modern influences.

We particularly enjoyed the local cuisine. Albanian dishes are hearty and flavorful, with a mix of Mediterranean and Balkan influences. Some of our favorite meals were grilled meats, fresh seafood, and local specialties like byrek (savory pastries) and tave kosi (a lamb and yogurt casserole). Don’t forget to try the raki (a traditional fruit brandy) and enjoy the outdoor dining experience that Tirana offers.

    Road Trip to Nearby Cities

While Tirana is a wonderful city to explore, renting a car allowed us to take trips to nearby cities and regions. The Albanian Riviera is a must-visit, with its crystal-clear waters and charming coastal towns. We visited Vlora and Dhermi, enjoying the scenic coastal drive and relaxing on the beaches.

We also took a trip to Berat, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its stunning Ottoman-era architecture and the famous “town of a thousand windows.” The drive to Berat was easy and scenic, and it felt great to have the freedom to explore at our own pace.

    A Journey to Theth

One of the highlights of our trip was visiting Theth, a remote village nestled in the Albanian Alps. The road to Theth is quite challenging, but having a rental car made the journey much more manageable. We had a 4-hour drive from Tirana to Theth, passing through winding roads and mountainous terrain. The breathtaking views of the Albanian Alps were well worth the trip.

Once in Theth, we enjoyed hiking and exploring the stunning landscapes, including the famous Theth Waterfall and the Grunas River. The peacefulness and natural beauty of Theth were truly magical, and it was an unforgettable experience.

Tips for Your Next Trip to Albania

If you’re planning a trip to Albania and renting a car, here are a few tips to make your journey even better:

Check the Car Before You Drive: Always inspect the rental car for any damages or issues before you leave the agency. This ensures that you’re not held responsible for any pre-existing damage.

Familiarize Yourself with Local Road Rules: While driving in Albania is generally safe, it’s important to know the local traffic laws. Albania has a few unique driving rules, such as giving priority to vehicles on roundabouts.

Take Scenic Routes: Albania is full of beautiful scenic drives, so make sure to take the time to enjoy the views. Roads like the SH8 along the Albanian Riviera offer stunning coastal vistas.

Be Prepared for Mountain Roads: Some of Albania’s most beautiful destinations are located in the mountains. While the roads can be narrow and winding, they are generally well-maintained, especially in the more popular tourist areas.

Plan for Fuel Stops: While major cities and tourist areas have plenty of gas stations, more remote regions may have fewer options. Plan your fuel stops accordingly, especially if you’re heading to places like Theth.

    Conclusion

Renting a car in Tirana is a safe, economical, and enjoyable way to explore Albania. It gives you the freedom to visit major tourist destinations as well as off-the-beaten-path locations. My experience with Shehu Rental Car was excellent, and I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Albania.

With affordable prices, excellent customer service, and well-maintained vehicles, Shehu Rental Car made our trip even more memorable. Whether you’re planning a short stay in Tirana or a longer road trip across Albania, renting a car is the best choice to make your visit safe and stress-free.
