    Fieldwork can be fun. You get to travel and meet new people. You solve problems on the spot. But it can be challenging. At times, spending a lot of time alone may feel lonely or isolating. You might be in your truck for hours. Or eating lunch by yourself. Some customers might not be nice. These things can make you feel bad.

    Being alone is tough for many field workers. We don’t talk about it enough. Let’s look at ways to feel better when working alone.

    The Hidden Struggles of Field Work

    Many people think fieldwork is great. You’re not stuck in an office. You can choose your hours. You see new places every day. But there’s a downside people don’t see. You spend a lot of time alone.

    You might fix air conditioners or be a plumber. Either way, you drive alone a lot. You work alone at job sites. This can make you feel bad over time.

    I once worked alone for a whole week. By the end, I felt like a robot. I was tired in my body and my mind. Talking to yourself gets weird after a while.

    A study found that 4 out of 10 field workers often feel alone. More jobs are becoming remote. This means more people might feel alone at work.

    Feeling alone isn’t just about being sad. It can lead to bigger problems like worry and depression. The field service industry is growing. This means more workers might face these issues.

    Why Mental Health Matters in Field Work

    When you feel bad, your work suffers. You make mistakes. You don’t work as well. You don’t like your job as much. In field service, you need to be careful and make customers happy. Feeling bad can make this hard.

    I had a friend who started making mistakes at work. He felt alone for months. When he talked about it, we understood why. Once he got help, he felt better and worked better.

    Simple Ways to Stay Mentally Fit

    There are ways to fight feeling alone in fieldwork. Here are a few ideas that have helped me and others:

    1. Stay connected with People: Just because you work alone doesn’t mean being isolated all of the time. Having someone around can make working remotely much more bearable!. Talk to friends and family. Use video calls during breaks. Join online groups for field workers.
    2. Make a Daily Plan:  Having a plan can make your day feel normal. It doesn’t have to be hard. You could exercise in the morning. Or listen to a podcast while driving. A plan gives you something to look forward to.
    3. Take Care of Your Body: Your body and mind are connected. Eat good food. Drink water. Get enough sleep. It’s easy to eat fast food and skip exercise when you’re busy. But this can make you feel worse. Even a short walk can help you feel better.
    4. Learn New Things: Use your free time to learn something new. You could learn a language with an app. Or try taking pictures. Doing something besides work can help you avoid burnout. It also gives you something to talk about with others.
