    What is Chronic Pain?

    Pain is important for the body as it protects you from danger. It is a powerful mechanism that raises your awareness about trouble. There are pain receptors in nerves that send messages to the brain. This helps you to experience pain in certain areas of the body. When pain takes longer than expected, generally more than three months, it is termed chronic pain. Chronic pain can be a sharp, dull, burning sensation or with extreme pressure.

    • Have a Good Sleep

    Pain often disrupts sleep. Therefore, you cannot achieve deep and restful. REM cycles are needed for an interrupted rest. If your medicine makes you feel drowsy, you might nap during the day. This disrupts your nighttime sleep.

Taking caffeine in the evening can also disrupt your slip, so try to avoid it, especially in the evening. If you are having difficulty getting sleep, try some relaxation techniques like listening to soothing music and practicing deep breathing to help you unwind before bed.

    • Nourish Your Body

    You, indeed, are what you eat. Your body works as a machine that needs proper fuel to run smoothly. Here fuel indicates nutrients. You should incorporate an anti-inflammatory diet into your plate, especially if you’re dealing with chronic pain. Lean proteins like fish, beans, and lentils are also important for optimal strength and pain management.

    Moreover, you should not avoid hydration because you can have severe pain, even if you have mild dehydration. Not to forget, you must avoid processed food, high sugar, and red meat as much as possible.

    • Manage Your Stress

    Stress and pain often go together. Because stress can contribute to pain and vice versa. When you are stressed, your body can react with tense muscles or headaches. 

    Stress can negatively affect your work, eating habits, mood, and relationships.  Therefore, it is important to pay attention to what stresses you out and how it impacts your life. If you can eliminate these stressors, you can ease your pain.

    • Include Some Exercises

    We understand that you might hate exercise, but it is a main factor in reducing chronic pain. If you are living a sudden lifestyle, then it will only worsen your condition. Note that exercising releases endorphins, which is a feel-good hormone. It works as a natural painkiller. Therefore, working out for at least 30 to 45 minutes every day can make you feel refreshed and relieved from chronic pain.

    You can try strengthening exercises to stabilize joints and prevent future injuries. Additionally, stretching exercises are also great for relieving stiffness and tension, especially in the lower back and neck area. Then relaxation exercises like deep breathing and visualization help you calm your mind and body. In other words, it helps to fight stress, and cardiovascular exercises offer both physical and mental benefits. You can try walking and swimming to enhance your heart, health, and endurance.

    If you do not see any comfort in chronic pain, no matter how hard you try, then it’s time to visit a pain management clinic. A specialized doctor will diagnose your chronic pain through different tests like electromyography, imaging tests, reflect and balance tests, urine tests, and more. Then the doctor will recommend the right pain management approach based on your pain, type, cause, age, and overall health. He/she may also suggest therapies like physical therapy, CBT, etc, to manage it.
