Is Coconut Water Good for Diabetes?

    Ben AustinBy Ben AustinOctober 31, 2024Updated:October 31, 2024No Comments31 Views

Coconut water is hydrating and an excellent alternative to the sugar-filled drinks or sports drinks. It carries very low levels of fat, proteins, and carbohydrates making it perfect for athletic drinking. What about for individuals with diabetes? Is coconut water permissible? Let’s look at whether it can be part of your diabetes management regimen.

Proper management of diabetes and what you consume along with your beverages. You can always join a clinically approved diabetes management program to manage diabetes in a healthier and better way. One such program is offered by Fitterfly, and it helps you make smart, informed choices about diet and lifestyle .

    Nutritional Content of Coconut Water

Coconut water is freshly refreshing and contains some essential nutrients. Coconut water serving will be around 100 ml and contains almost no fat: about 0.16 grams; carbohydrate amount is around 6.3 grams and about 3.84 grams of protein. In terms of electrolytes, it is an excellent source of potassium, which supplies around 215 mg, while sodium at 28 mg serves to help maintain fluid balance in the body. It is rich in other nutrients, such as calcium and iron, in small quantities.

For its low-calorie intake and high nutritional content, coconut water has been viewed as one of the healthy beverages for hydration purposes. However, for people suffering from diabetes, it is critical to know about the above-mentioned nutrients, specifically natural sugars, and about the various effects these have on blood sugars.

    General Benefits of Coconut Water

Coconut water is very well known for the various health benefits it contains. The following are some of the reasons why it makes an excellent choice:

    • It maintains fluid and electrolyte balance in the body, making it an excellent alternative to sugary drinks or sodas.
    • It hydrates the body very well, so it’s very good for hot weather or even right after exercise.
    • Coconut water is high in potassium, which is said to help lower blood pressure. Thus, it is a good drink for hypertensive patients.
    • It contains anti-inflammatory properties and can even help cool the body during fever. Thus, it can easily be used as an alternative medicine for several diseases.
    • The drink contains antioxidants that naturally protect the cells from free radicals and contribute to health.
    • Coconut water contains enzymes that aid digestion. It is a low-calorie drink, perfect for weight loss.

Is Coconut Water Good for People with Diabetes?

Coconut water is a low-calorie drink with a GI of 54, which is moderate. Again, this is the case for not all coconut water. Coconut water that has been sweetened or that comes from very mature coconuts can have a much higher GI and thus cannot be recommended to those who are diabetic.

However, individuals whose blood sugar levels cannot be controlled should not drink coconut water regularly because it carries its own sugars in the form of glucose and fructose. These increase the level of blood sugar if consumed in excess amounts. Hence, consult your nutritionist or diabetes care team before taking coconut water if your level of blood sugar is within a healthy range.

What should Diabetic patients consider when having Coconut Water?

Diabetic patients or those with prediabetes must refrain from excessive coconut water consumption, as this may cause fluctuating blood glucose levels. Those whose blood sugar is well-controlled can allow moderate amounts of coconut water but should avoid taking it with coconut meat, or malai, since that contributes to more calories and fat content.
