Discovering Ways to Keep Your House Free of Pests

    Ben AustinBy Ben AustinAugust 9, 2024Updated:September 16, 2024No Comments22 Views

Several thousand species of pests can infest your home and garden. While some damage the buildings’ infrastructure, some can bite or sting you and spread different diseases and infections. Therefore, keeping pests out of your property is essential to safeguard your health and home infrastructure.

Maintaining a pest-free home is essential for both comfort and health, and there are numerous strategies that homeowners can employ to prevent infestations. However, when DIY methods fall short, professional pest control becomes necessary to tackle persistent issues. For residents in Arlington Heights, Greenix offers comprehensive pest control services, ensuring homes remain protected from unwanted invaders through effective and eco-friendly solutions.

However, pest-proofing your home may not be as simple as you think. It is a thorough process, so seeking help from professionals like Irvine pest control may be a good idea. They can provide highly effective and long-lasting pest control solutions.

Damage caused by pests in the home

Different pests can lead to different kinds of problems. Some are dangerous for your health, while others may threaten your garden. Therefore, you need to first identify the pests to devise effective methods to eliminate them.

However, irrespective of the species, the following are some common types of damage caused by pests in homes.

    • Structural damages: No matter whether minor or major, damage to the structure of your house can lead to a fatal accident if not prevented in time. Pests like termites, ants, and beetles can harm the wood incorporated into the structure of your house. While these pests may take a while to damage the property, you should act promptly, as even small damage can lead to an accident.
    • Electrical damages: Rats and mice chew on anything they can find to keep their teeth in shape and dull the pain. Electrical wires and cables are not expected here. Rats can chew on them and cause electrocution, short-circuit, power outage, or fire.
    • Furniture damages: Pests can also attack furniture in your home, as it provides them with shelter and warmth. They can dig holes in your furniture to burrow deeper into it, defecate, and urinate around it, which can cause several diseases.
    • Damage to household items: Pests like termites, silverfish, cockroaches, etc., can destroy your clothes, carpets, and other fabrics and cardboard in your home. They also carry disease-causing germs and viruses.
    • Holes in soffit and sidings: Rodents like rats, squirrels, and mice can create holes in soffits and sidings of your house and create an entry point for themselves. Not only can they weaken the structure of your house, but they can also cause accidents like fire and spread several diseases.

Keeping pests out of your home

While different pest control techniques are required to remove different types of pests from your home, the following are some common measures that may help you ensure that no pests get inside.

    • Ensure your doors are sealed properly, as poorly sealed doors may give way to unwanted pests inside your home. If your door has gaps under it, you can install an aluminum or steel threshold to cover it.
    • You can install screen windows and doors, such as 20-mesh screens, to ensure that you get enough air and light while also keeping pests out of your home.
    • Keep your yard clean and well-maintained to prevent the infestation of insects like mosquitoes, fleas, cockroaches, etc. Also, do not let water accumulate in your yard, as it can act as a breeding pool for mosquitoes.
    • Repair crevices and cracks as small insects may find their way inside your home through these spaces.
    • Repair and seal the leaky pipes and holes in the wall for cable lines and other wires, as they may be passageways for insects.
    • You can use hardwire cloth on big openings like chimneys or roof vents to keep bugs, squirrels, rats, and raccoons out of your house.
    • Make sure you do not leave out clutter that may act as a food source for the pests and attract them to your house. If you maintain a clean house, the bugs will want to move out in search of a better food source.
    • Use a trash can with a tight lid and empty it every night to prevent bugs from feasting on the trash.
    • Keep the foundation protected and clear to reduce the risk of termite, ant, spider, and flea infestations.

Employing the above methods can greatly reduce the risks of pest infestations in your home. You can also hire a professional pest control team to ensure that your house is pest-free.
