For those who have watched ‘The Beach,’ you’ll know the story behind it. A group of traveling misfits go in search of a secret island in Thailand inhibited by acres of the world’s best marijuana.
Although the Danny Boyle-directed movie was based on the 1996 novel by Alex Garland, the premise bears an uncanny resemblance to The Sanctuary. According to CNN, Gill Beddows and Steve Sanders started The Sanctuary after becoming disillusioned with Thailand’s increasingly commercialized party lifestyle.
They then founded a hippie-type compound on Koh Phangan, accessible only by boat or strenuous hike.
Although Garland never confirmed if The Sanctuary was the inspiration behind his best-selling tome, it’s good to know that cannabis aficionados don’t need to risk their lives in search of the perfect toke.
Now that the globe is more receptive to cannabis culture and laws and regulations are relaxed, vacationers need not feel shame when lighting up. While some spots still frown upon it, others are ready to welcome you with open arms.

Ann Arbor, Michigan
Isn’t it great that you don’t have to travel far to enjoy some of the best cannabis the U.S. has on offer?
100.7 WITL says Ann Arbor hosts the most cannabis-related events in Michigan. Along with Grand Rapids, the city has a lot going on in “green” activities.
When visiting an Ann Arbor dispensary, you’re not only getting great service but also great prices. Because downtown Ann Arbor is home to the University of Michigan, it has its fair share of customers.
Here’s something to put in your pipe and smoke: Ann Arbor is reportedly the state’s third-best city for stoners. This means high-quality products are never in short supply, from hybrid THC to delicious edibles to concentrates.
In a hurry? Curbside pickup is at your service. Conveniently located, most cannabis dispensaries have knowledgeable staff on hand who make great recommendations.
Vibe Dispensaries says the best part about Ann Arbor marijuana dispensaries is that many prioritize education, and host workshops that teach customers about cannabis use and its benefits.
Thailand
It appears the fun always happens in Thailand. Who can forget that scene from ‘The White Lotus’ season 3 with Rick going full rogue by setting venomous serpents free at a cobra show in Koh Samui?
He was admittedly stoned after purchasing a joint from his local friendly store which is proof that Thai cannabis strains can be overwhelmingly stronger.
There has been some debate surrounding a new proposal to relist the plant as a narcotic. However, Euronews reports that draft legislation does not explicitly ban the recreational use of weed. Also, it doesn’t endorse plans to reclassify the substance as a narcotic.
The draft proposal includes fines and penalties for selling or using cannabis outside the bill’s provisions. So, if you plan on lighting up in Thailand, do so at your own risk.
Barcelona, Spain
Spannabis is one of Europe’s premiere cannabis expos with its roots firmly planted in Barcelona. mg Magazine describes it as a mashup between MJBizCon and a High Times Cannabis Cup.
Here you’ll find international vendors and local boutique breeders. While the U.S. has the luxury of dispensaries and online stores, Europe isn’t as lucky.
Acquiring high-quality and trustworthy finished products is a mission of its own. That’s why Spannabis attracts cannabis lovers from far and wide. The latest genetics are on display as well as cannabis club tours.
Cannabis is decriminalized in Spain, allowing adults 18 and over to cultivate it for personal use. But, purchasing, possessing, or consuming it in public may result in a fine.
It’s the reason why private cannabis clubs are thriving in this part of Europe.
Honorable Mentions
