6 Ways Technology is Impacting the Legal Profession

    Ben AustinBy Ben AustinAugust 27, 2024Updated:September 10, 2024No Comments38 Views

The legal profession is undergoing a profound change due to technological advancements. Today’s lawyers need to adopt these advancements in addition to being well-versed in the law. In fact, many law schools, such as Stanford Law School, now offer courses in legal technology, recognizing the growing importance of these skills. Let’s explore the multifaceted impact of technology on the legal industry and what it means for legal professionals and clients alike.

      Automating Routine Tasks

Automation is a game-changer in the legal industry. Lawyers can automate many routine tasks, such as drafting and reviewing legal documents. This frees legal professionals to focus on more critical and complex tasks, such as court appearances or meeting with witnesses.

Document automation tools can now quickly generate customized contracts, pleadings, and other legal documents. It can also allow lawyers to create templates for frequently used documents. Lawyers can then use the software to generate custom documents, which prompts users to input specific information, dramatically reducing the time spent on repetitive drafting tasks.

Similarly, AI contract review tools can analyze contracts at superhuman speeds. It can identify key clauses and potential risks and even suggest improvements. For example, it may suggest including a force majeure clause. In the professional realm, a force majeure clause allows the removal of liability in case of unforeseen events that prevent parties from fulfilling their obligations.

JPMorgan Chase implemented an AI program called COIN (Contract Intelligence). This AI program can review commercial loan agreements in seconds, a task that previously took 360000 hours of work by lawyers and loan officers annually.

    1. Blockchain and Smart Contracts

Blockchain technology, known as the foundation of cryptocurrency, is also making waves with smart contracts. These are self-executing contracts with all the terms directly written into code. These contracts automatically execute when predefined conditions are met without intermediaries. These contracts could streamline many legal processes, particularly in real estate transactions or supply chain management. For instance, once the buyer’s payment is complete, a smart contract can automatically transfer property ownership, eliminating the need for a manual transfer process.

    2. Improving Client Communication and Service

Technology is changing how lawyers communicate with and present information to their clients. For instance, client portals allow clients to log in and access case information, view and sign documents digitally, and communicate with their attorneys easily.

In this regard, video conferencing tools have made it easier to have attorney-client conferences from anywhere, saving time and eliminating the need for in-person meetings. It is particularly beneficial when a client’s residence is far from their lawyer’s office.

Some law firms have even experimented with AI-powered chatbots, automating client inquiries and giving essential legal advice. They make it easier to answer policy questions, general information and frequently asked questions. They can handle a substantial amount of legal queries, which frees up lawyers while ensuring that clients receive relevant and accurate legal information, raising the quality of service provided.

    3. Enhancing Case Management

Case management software is swiftly becoming cloud-based, which offers a central hub around which all aspects of legal practice can be controlled and commanded. These systems often include time-tracking tools that allow lawyers to easily log billable hours, even on mobile devices. It allows for remote working as lawyers can access case files and confer with clients. These systems also aid lawyers by providing them with deadlines and documents. In addition, they enable this information to be shared with the rest of the team.

    4. The Rise of Legal Analytics

Legal analytics uses data analysis techniques to gain insights into legal trends and case results. They provide strategic insights by analyzing millions of court documents for lawyers to help inform their legal strategy. For instance, one can discover how a given judge ruled on similar issues in the past or how successful a given type of motion has been, generating an enormous strategic advantage for lawyers.

    5. Marketing in Law Firms

The digital revolution has also transformed law firm marketing and client acquisition. Traditional word-of-mouth referrals are no longer the sole avenue for attracting clients. In fact, 62% of law firms have reported having developed strategies for marketing in the law firm, indicating its growing importance.

Firms now use their websites for branding, search engine optimization (SEO), and content marketing. For instance, firms can use an approach known as thought leadership, which involves generating innovative ideas, insights, and opinions and sharing them with others, such as in the form of blog posts or white papers, to influence, inspire, and lead the industry. It helps establish the firm’s expertise and voice in broader public and industry discussions.

Social media has also become an indispensable marketing tool for law firms. Research suggests that, on average, 90% of law firms globally actively use social media platforms. Firms can experiment with various content types, such as podcasts, blog posts, or reels, and find out which works for them. For example, reels may be more effective if their purpose is educating the youth on legal matters.

    Endnote

As we look to the future, it’s clear that the legal profession of tomorrow will look very different from that of today. Still, its fundamental purpose (to uphold justice and serve clients) will remain unchanged. Adopting these new tech trends can help legal professionals fulfill this mission more effectively than ever.
