While it might seem that the world has been pretty fully explored, with few mysteries or hidden corners left, this is far from the case. In fact, the world’s oceans remain, for the most part, an enigma. Covering over 70% of the planet’s surface, the seas and oceans are largely unexplored, and full of secrets and phenomena that defy explanation, baffle scientists, and intrigue travelers. From mystical Caribbean islands to disappearing ships and airplanes, let’s dive into some of the most fascinating unsolved mysteries of the ocean depths.

The Bloop: A Mysterious Underwater Sound
In 1997, underwater listening stations across a vast swathe of the Pacific Ocean picked up a low-frequency sound, which they called ‘The Bloop’. This sound, loud enough to be heard by sensors over 3,500 miles apart, was inexplicable, and its source remains unidentified to this day. Some speculate that it was made by a vast, unknown sea creature, while others suggest it was the sound of a huge ice shelf cracking. Either way, The Bloop remains a mystery.
The Milky Sea Phenomenon
Sometimes, in the middle of the night, huge areas of the ocean glow a bright, milky white. This phenomenon has been noticed by sailors for centuries, yet has never been properly explained. Stretching for thousands of square miles, it is believed that it is a particular kind of bioluminescence caused by microscopic organisms, but scientists are still uncertain exactly how The Milky Sea is triggered and why and when it occurs.
Underwater Ruins and Anomalies
Across the planet and off the coast of every country on earth you can find ruins and remains of ancient civilizations. While many of these make sense due to natural disasters, changing coastlines, and so on, there are still plenty of anomalies which remain mysterious and challenge our understanding of ancient cultures. For example, the Yonaguni Monument off the coast of Japan is a gigantic rock formation that appears to be the remains of a sunken city, but there are no records of an ancient Japanese civilization that could conform to its age or location. There are similar structures all over the world, from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean, which have inspired legends like The Lost City of Atlantis and sparked debates about submarine civilizations amongst scientists and conspiracy theorists alike.
Deep-Sea Gigantism and Unexplored Species
We have only explored a tiny fraction of the ocean, so it is understandable that we know and understand very little about the creatures that inhabit the deepest, darkest reaches of the underwater world. What we do know is that many deep-sea species exhibit gigantism, growing to sizes far larger than their shallow-water relatives. No one knows exactly why this is, and while there are certain theories, none are fully persuasive. Given that there is plenty more ocean to be discovered, the likelihood is that a significant percentage of its inhabitants remain unknown, meaning more mysteries await in the unexplored depths!
The Bermuda Triangle
Between Bermuda, Miami, and Puerto Rico, there lies a triangle of…nothing. This enormous expanse is infamous as being somewhere ships and aircraft go into and never come out. While many try to explain away these disappearances with human error, mechanical failure, natural causes, or even piracy, the number and repetitive nature of these cases defy such simple explanations. As a result, myths and legends about supernatural forces or extra-terrestrial technology abound.
The ocean is the last true undiscovered frontier on Earth, and there is so much that we still do not understand about the seas that cover the vast majority of our planet. From unexplained sounds and lights in the deep to gigantic creatures and ancient underwater cities, the mysteries of the watery deep remain unexplained and mystical, fit for wonder and speculation only!
