Different mosquito species and the threats they pose

Several mosquito species are found throughout California. While some are less harmful than others, they all can cause irritation. The most common and the most dangerous ones are as follows.

    Western encephalitis mosquitoes

Western encephalitis mosquitoes (culex tarsalis) are light brown and have a light color band on their proboscis. They usually breed around ponds, agricultural areas, and vegetated pools. Western encephalitis mosquitoes can spread the West Nile virus, which spreads mainly in humans, birds, and horses. They can also spread the St. Louis and western equine encephalitis virus. Their usual bite times are dusk, dawn, and after dark.

    Northern/Southern house mosquitoes

Northern/ southern house mosquitoes (Culex pipiens/ Culex quinquefasciatus) are known to spread the West Nile virus and encephalitis virus. They usually bite around the dark hours of the day. Northern/ southern house mosquitoes are brown and have dark-scaled unbanded legs and proboscis. They lay their eggs in ponds, foul water, drains, and artificial containers.

    Yellow fever mosquitoes

Yellow fever mosquitoes (Aedes aegypti) lay their eggs in standing water bodies like containers, bottle caps, etc., which helps them thrive in urban areas. They can spread dengue, zika, yellow fever, and chikungunya viruses. They are dark brown in color and have two white stripes on the back that look like a lyre, with white bands on the legs. These mosquitoes bite during the daytime and around dusk and dawn.

    Asian tiger mosquito

Asian tiger mosquitoes (Aedes albopictus) spread deadly viruses like chikungunya, dengue, zika, and yellow fever. They are black and have a white strip on their thorax and white bands on their legs. They lay eggs in standing waters and bite around daytime, dusk, and dawn.

    Western tree-hole mosquito

Western tree-hole mosquitoes (Aedes dieresis) lay their eggs in tree holes, tires, and empty containers. They can carry a deadly parasite called dog heartworm, which is very dangerous for dogs and cats. They are dark brown in color and have white bands on their legs.

    Western malaria mosquito

Western malaria mosquito (anopheles freeborni) has over 30 species worldwide, all notorious for spreading the deadly malaria parasite. They are light brown and have dashed black marks on their wings with a pointing-out abdomen. They can lay eggs in vegetated pools, agriculture areas, and algal mats.

How to prevent mosquitoes from spreading

You can use the following methods to control the mosquito populations in your area.

    • You can use oil drips that create a thin layer on top of the water bodies that could act as a breeding source for the mosquitoes. It prevents mosquitoes from laying eggs in water, and the larvae inside the water cannot penetrate the oil layer.
    • You can also use mosquito traps that kill mosquitoes and trap their eggs.
    • You can also use larvae-eating fishes like Gambusia affinis
    • Larvicides are also beneficial when you want to prevent mosquitoes from spreading further
    • Spreading insecticides through a fogging machine is also beneficial in eliminating mosquitoes.
    • However, if you face a massive mosquito outbreak, you should call a pest control agency to handle the situation.

    Final takeaway

Mosquito bites can be irritating, but the health threats they pose to humans are much more dangerous and can prove fatal in many cases. Therefore, it is essential to employ preventive measures to keep mosquitoes from spreading. A pest control agency can provide highly effective solutions in such cases.
