Which is Harder: CISCO’s CCNP, R&S, or CCNP Security?

Ben AustinBy Ben AustinJuly 12, 2024No Comments28 Views

The Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) Routing and Switching certification attests to one’s capacity for organizing, putting into practice, confirming, and debugging enterprise networks locally and over large areas. It also fosters teamwork with experts- in sophisticated security, wireless, video, and voice solutions.

The CCNP Routing and Switching certification is appropriate for networking professionals with at least one year of experience who want to enhance their abilities and work independently on complicated network solutions.

The competencies needed for positions in enterprise networks, support, systems, and network engineering have been proven by those who have earned the CCNP Routing and Switching certification. This certification’s knowledge of routing and switching protocols will give a durable foundation, as these skills are equally important in today’s physical networks and virtualized network activities.

Among the certifications offered, the Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) Routing & Switching (R&S) and CCNP Security are two prominent tracks that cater to different specializations within the networking industry.

A common question among professionals is which certification is harder: CCNP R&S or CCNP Security? This article delves into the complexities, prerequisites, content, and challenges associated with each certification to supply a clearer understanding of which might be more demanding for candidates.

CCNP Routing & Switching (R&S)

The certification focuses on advanced routing, switching, and troubleshooting. It requires a deep understanding of network fundamentals, with hands-on experience with Cisco solutions in complex network configurations.

CCNP Security

On the other hand, the CCNP Security certification gets tailored for network security professionals. It emphasizes designing, implementing, securing, and maintaining Cisco network security solutions. Candidates must have a comprehensive understanding of security technologies and practices, including identity management, firewall, VPN, and intrusion prevention systems (IPS), with others.

Prerequisites

Both certifications require candidates to have specific prerequisites. For the CCNP R&S, a valid CCNA R&S certification or any CCIE certification serves as a prerequisite. Similarly, CCNP Security candidates must have a valid CCNA Security certification or any CCIE certification. These prerequisites ensure that candidates have foundational knowledge and skills before advancing to more specialized certifications.

Exam Content and Focus

The CCNP Security certification, conversely, requires candidates to pass four exams, focusing on securing Cisco networks and devices. These exams cover securing routers and switches, choosing, deploying, supporting, and troubleshooting Firewalls, VPNs, and IDS/IPS solutions for networking environments.

CCNP Security due to numerous factors:

• CCNP security has much fewer study materials to choose from.
• CCNP Security has much less legal test-preparing materials.
• Study groups for CCNP Security are significantly less than those for CCNP R&S.
• CCNP Security requires four exams, while R&S requires three.
• The CCNP Security labs need additional equipment. Not only switches and routers but also ASA
• Compared to CCNP Security, CCNP Routing and Switching is more comfortable to practice in a virtual environment.
• Most Cisco engineers and technicians begin their careers with CCNA Routing and Switching. It is somewhat fundamental. Following that, even with little to no experience, you can move straight on to CCNP Routing and Switching.
• It’s in-depth, but it’s like moving down the same track.
• You must first achieve your CCNA Security to master the fundamentals of CCNP Security.
• Numerous new subjects and technologies will get covered in CCNA Security. After that, you begin working for your CCNP Security.
• Getting your CCNP R&S first, after completing your CCNA R&S, is what we advise folks interested in the network security track to do. Then, by passing the CCNA and CCNP security exams, you can focus on-security.

Difficulty Level

Determining which certification is more difficult is subjective and depends on a candidate’s background, interests, and areas of expertise. However, several factors contribute to the perceived difficulty of each certification.

Technical Complexity:

The CCNP R&S covers various networking topics, requiring a deep understanding of routing and switching technologies. Candidates need to be proficient in configuring and troubleshooting complex network infrastructures. The CCNP Security, however, delves into specific security protocols, tools, and practices. It demands a detailed knowledge of security policies, threat mitigation, and secure network design and implementation.

Breadth vs. Depth:

CCNP R&S has a broader focus on general networking technologies, while CCNP Security requires a deeper dive into the specifics of network security. Depending on one’s experience, a more expansive scope might be more challenging due to the range of topics, or a deeper focus might be challenging because of the intricate details involved.

Practical Experience:

Hands-on experience significantly impacts the difficulty level of both certifications. Professionals working daily with routing and switching might find CCNP R&S more straightforward, while those in security roles may lean towards CCNP Security. The availability of resources and lab environments to practice can also affect preparation and success.

Personal Interest and Career Goals:

Interest in the subject matter plays-a vital role in how hard a certification feels. If you’re passionate about network security, studying for the CCNP Security might be more engaging and seem easier than CCNP R&S, and vice versa.

Why Didn’t We Talk About CCNP Wages?

Alright, you’ve got us. Which certifications will provide you with the most value for your money, and the average CCNP income has not been covered? We consciously chose not to do so for three reasons:

• It will be challenging to differentiate between specializations based on pay data, as most will be for “CCNP” or “CCNP Enterprise.”
• There hasn’t been enough time to gather enough information to determine- the differences between the new CCNPs.
• CCNP-certified professionals, regardless of skill, typically earn a fair living. Over time, you’ll probably make more money if you choose and become proficient in an area of interest.

Conclusion

Both CCNP R&S and CCNP Security certifications are challenging right and cater to different career paths within the networking field. The difficulty of each certification is subjective and varies based on the candidate’s background, experience, and personal interest in the material.

To decide which certification is more demanding or better suited to your career goals, consider your experience level, the areas you enjoy working in, and where you see your career heading. Whether you choose CCNP R&S or CCNP Security, both certifications are valuable assets that can significantly enhance your knowledge, skills, and professional opportunities in the ever-evolving networking field.
