5 tips to install towing mirrors for caravans and trailers

Ben AustinBy Ben AustinSeptember 27, 2024No Comments24 Views
    Driving with a trailer caravan

Alright, buckle up folks! We’re about to dive into the wild world of towing mirror installation. Now, I know what you’re thinking – “Installing mirrors? How hard can it be?” Well, let me tell you, I’ve seen grown men nearly come to tears over these things. But fear not! With these tips, you’ll be seeing clearly in no time, without the need for a stiff drink or a therapist. So, whether you’re gearing up for that cross-country caravan adventure or just hauling your kid’s overstuffed college dorm furniture, these five nuggets of wisdom will have you installing best towing mirrors for caravans and trailers like a pro. Let’s get cracking, shall we?

    Measure Twice, Buy Once

Don’t let your wallet cry because your eyes were lazy.

Look, I get it. You’re excited about your new caravan or trailer, and you just want to hit the road. But trust me on this one – take a breath and break out that measuring tape. You need to know exactly what size mirrors you need. Measure the width of your trailer or caravan at its widest point. Then, check how far your vehicle’s standard mirrors extend. The difference? That’s how much extra visibility you need. Oh, and don’t forget to factor in your vehicle’s make and model. There’s nothing worse than ordering a set of fancy mirrors only to find out they fit about as well as your high school prom tux does now. Been there, done that, got the “I’m an idiot” t-shirt.

Choose Your Weapon: Clip-on vs. Replacement

To clip or not to clip, that is the question.

Alright, decision time. Are you going for clip-on mirrors or full replacements? Clip-ons are great if you only tow occasionally. They’re like the Swiss Army knife of the mirror world – versatile and easy to stow away. But if you’re constantly hitching up, replacement mirrors might be your best bet. They’re more stable and often offer better visibility. Plus, you won’t have to fiddle with them every time you decide to tow something. Just remember, if you go the replacement route, you’re committed. It’s like getting a tattoo, but for your car. Choose wisely, my friend.

    Prep Like a Surgeon

Clean mirrors save lives… and relationships.

Before you start slapping on those new mirrors, take a minute to clean everything. And I mean everything. Your existing mirrors, the mounting area, even your hands (nobody likes greasy fingerprints, Karen). Use a good degreaser and make sure everything’s dry. Why? Because a clean surface means better adhesion for clip-ons and easier installation for replacements. Plus, it’ll make you feel like a real pro. Put on some gloves if you’re feeling fancy. Pretend you’re a surgeon about to perform a delicate operation. Because in a way, you are – you’re about to give your vehicle the gift of sight.

    Follow the Manual (No, Really)

Turns out, those little booklets aren’t just for show.

I know, I know. Real men don’t need instructions, right? Wrong. Unless you want your shiny new mirrors flying off on the highway (been there, it’s not fun), read the darn manual. Each set of mirrors is a little different, and the manufacturers actually know what they’re talking about. Shocking, I know. Pay special attention to torque specifications if you’re installing replacement mirrors. Too loose, and they’ll wobble like a drunk sailor. Too tight, and you might crack something. And let’s be honest, your ego can take the hit of following directions better than your wallet can take replacing broken mirrors.

    Test, Adjust, Repeat

Because “good enough” isn’t good enough when you’re towing.

Alright, you’ve got them installed. You’re feeling pretty good about yourself. But don’t crack open that victory beer just yet, champ. It’s time to test and adjust. Sit in the driver’s seat and check your view. Can you see the entire length of your trailer or caravan? No? Keep adjusting. Get a buddy to help you check blind spots. Take it for a short test drive if you can. And here’s a pro tip: check your mirrors again after a few miles of driving. Sometimes they need a little fine-tuning after they’ve “settled in.” It’s like breaking in a new pair of shoes, but for your car.

There you have it, folks. Five tips to get those towing mirrors installed without losing your mind (or your side mirrors). Remember, patience is a virtue, especially when you’re trying to avoid taking out every mailbox on your street. Now go forth and tow with confidence! And if all else fails, well… that’s what insurance is for, right? (Just kidding, please don’t tell them I said that.)
